Appearance: white crystalline. powder, hygroscopic!!!
Smell: faint vinegary

IMPORTANT: store in a tightly closed container in a dry place!!!
When heated, - decomposes and releases toxic NH3 fumes!!!

Receipt:
-neutralization of acetic acid-with ammonium carbonate
-saturation of ice vinegar with ammonia
(it is difficult to obtain crystals from -due to hygroscopicity)

Solubility:
- very good good in water (~1480 g/l at 20 degree)
- in alcohol, acetone
- in liquid ammonia (!)

Application:
1) Analytical chemistry - for determination of Al and Fe
2) Separation of lead sulfate from other sulfates
3) In pharmaceuticals - as an auxiliary. in-in for biopharmaceuticals. drugs
4) Purification of natural medicines
5) In electroplating - for removing coatings Cu-Ni-Cr
6) Preservative for meat (!)
7) In the production of foam rubber and vinyl plastics
8) Buffer solutions (pH 4.75 ± 1 and 9.25 ± 1)
9) Protein precipitation
10) Electrospray. mass-spectrometry

- is also suitable for DNA precipitation; it removes dNTP and oligosaccharide impurities.
DO NOT use with T4-polynucleotide kinase - inhibits!!!

Chem. properties:
- salt of a weak base and a weak base
- when heated → acetamide: NH4CH3CO2 → CH3C(O)NH2 + H2O
- upon further heating → acetonitrile (methyl cyanide)

CAUTION: Incompatible with strong. oxidizing agents and sodium hypochlorite!
